Easy Sweet and Salty Honey Mustard Easter Snack Mix

Add something sweet and salty to this year’s Easter celebration! This Easter snack mix is one of those easy recipes that always disappears quickly at our house. Made with honey, mustard powder, crunchy goodies, and fun Easter sprinkles. It’s as delicious as it is adorable.

Whether you do brunch or dinner for Easter it usually is a plethora of rich dishes that take time and a lot of effort to pull off. The ham and roasted vegetables and all the fancy Easter desserts are awesome for the adults but it’s nice to have something easy and fun just for the kids—and the kids at heart.

If you’ve ever heard of (or had) bunny bait trail mix or a bunny bait recipe I want you to know this is not that.

Those recipes are more like muddy buddies or puppy chow with white chocolate chips or vanilla almond bark and peanut butter melted and used as a coating. It is more of a dessert with everything from mini marshmallows to Cadbury eggs to Reece’s Pieces to M&Ms mixed in.

This recipe is more like a fun snack mix that is a little sweet and a little salty with a colorful dose of Easter sprinkles mixed in at the end.

I like to add a large bowl of this Easter Chex mix to the appetizer spread on Easter but I normally make it a few days in advance so I can much on some while putting together the Easter baskets. I love a good make-ahead recipe, don’t you?

  • Roasted salted peanuts or your favorite roasted salted nuts.
  • Honey Nut Cheerios
  • Unsalted butter or coconut oil or avocado oil for a dairy-free version.
  • Honey
  • Dry mustard powder

How To Make This Recipe

step one

Mix the dry ingredients. Heat oven to 275°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine the rice Chex, mini pretzels, peanuts, and Cheerios in large mixing bowl.

step two

Mix the sauce ingredients. If using butter or coconut oil, combine the butter (or coconut oil), honey, and salt in a small saucepan and cook over medium-low heat. Melt the butter and other ingredients together. Whisk to create a smooth sauce.

You can also do this in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave. Heating at 30 second intervals until the butter is melted.

If using avocado oil you won’t need to heat anything, just mix everything together in a medium bowl.

step three

Combine. Pour sauce over the cereal mixture in the bowl. Stir gently so you don’t break up the cereal. Make sure everything is thoroughly coated.

step four

Bake. Spread mixture in an even layer on the baking sheet and bake for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes so it cooks evenly.

step five

Cool and dig in! Sprinkle the sprinkles over the mix while still warm otherwise they won’t stick.

Allow Easter snack mix to cool completely on the baking sheet, stirring as it cools so it doesn’t form big clumps. Dig in or cover tightly in an airtight container and store at room temperature.

While Chex mix is the perfect treat for Easter, I certainly don’t limit it to that time of year! I leave the sprinkles out and whip up a batch to snack on during the Super Bowl, use Christmas colored sprinkles for the holidays (same goes for Halloween or Valentine’s Day), or even serve a big bowl on movie nights.

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 275°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
  • Mix together corn Chex, pretzels, peanuts, and Cheerios in a large bowl.
  • In a small sauce pan, combine butter (or coconut oil), honey, mustard powder and salt. Place over medium-low heat and stir until butter is melted and mixture is smooth.
If using avocado oil you won't need to heat the mixture, just stir until everything is combined.
  • Pour over pretzel mixture and stir until everything is well coated. Stir gently so you don't break up the Chex. Spread evenly on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven, and sprinkle the Easter sprinkles over the mixture while it is still warm otherwise they won't stick. Toss the mixture every 10 minutes or so until it cools so it doesn't all clump together. The Chex mix will crisp up as it cools. Store in a ziplock bag or sealed container for up to 2 weeks at room temperature.

Notes

  1. Mustard Powder: This may seem like a ton of mustard powder, but it takes a ton to get any of its flavor to come through, so don’t skimp!
  2. For a gluten-free version: Use gluten-free pretzels and Cheerios or swap one of them for popcorn.
  3. Feel free to customize the snack: Add your favorite roasted salted nuts like cashews or almonds instead of the peanuts.
  4. Storage: Store the Easter snack mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
