Sweet, tart, and refreshing, this passion fruit margarita is made from real, fresh passion fruit and limes. It comes together quickly and hits the spot on a warm summer day.
The acidity from the lime and passion fruit makes it the best party cocktail. It cuts through spicy bites beautifully, making it the perfect sip between plates of green chile bbq oysters or smoked maple habanero popcorn.
This is also a great drink to keep in mind when you’re building a menu that leans rich and indulgent. Serve it at your next holiday brunch with tequila brown sugar bacon, mole membrillo donuts, or churro French toast casserole. The sour punch of the passion fruit cuts through these decadent dishes.
Whether you’re serving it with Ecuadorian steak and eggs, choriqueso pinwheels, brown sugar chipotle salmon or a full appetizer spread built around bold Mexican-inspired flavors, this Passion Fruit Margarita brings everything together.
It’s relaxed, celebratory, and endlessly adaptable—it’s one of those cool margarita recipes that feels just as right for a casual backyard night as it does for a festive gathering where the table stays full and the glasses never stay empty for long.

Full ingredient amounts and instructions can be found below on the recipe card
- Kosher salt or specialty salt: for rimming the glass. If you want to make a spicy passion fruit margarita you could rim the glass with a chili-lime seasoning, like Tajín.
- Limes: for fresh-squeezed lime juice and lime slices for garnish
- Ice
- Tequila blanco: like any classic margarita recipe we use blanco or silver tequila. It’s clean, pure agave flavor is the perfect base for the sweet and sour passion fruit.
- Orange liqueur: my favorite is Cointreau but you could also use Grand Mariner or your favorite triple sec
- Agave nectar: to add a touch of sweetness. You could also use homemade simple syrup which is easy to make by simply combining equal parts sugar and water, bring it to a boil, and whisking until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool completely before using.
- Fresh passion fruit: Fresh passionfruit can be found in some grocery stores or farmers markets. If you can’t find it you can also use frozen passion fruit puree (thaw it first).

FAQs
Yes! Just thaw it first, then substitute 2 teaspoons of the pulp for the fresh passion fruit.
Absolutely. Muddle a few slices of jalapeño in the shaker like I do for my easy spicy margarita and rim the glass with a chili-salt blend.
Blanco tequila is ideal for this recipe. It’s clean and crisp, which pairs beautifully with bright citrus and tropical fruit. Make sure it says 100% Blue Weber Agave on the label to ensure high quality.
If you don’t like the pop of passion fruit seeds you’ll want to strain it and skip the passion fruit garnish.
Passion Fruit Margarita Recipe
If you have access to fresh passion fruit, this passion fruit margarita recipe should absolutely be on your list of things to try. It's easy to shake up with your favorite tequila, fresh-squeezed lime juice, orange liqueur, and tangy and sweet pops of passion fruit.
Ingredients
- Kosher salt or specialty salt, for rimming the glass
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
- Ice
- 1½ shots (3 ounces) tequila
- ½ shot (1 ounce) orange liqueur, such as Cointreau
- ½ shot (1 ounce) agave syrup
- Pulp of 1 fresh passion fruit, plus another passion fruit half for garnish
- Juice of 2 limes
Instructions
- Prepare the glass: Pour about ¼ cup of the kosher salt onto a small plate. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass, then dip the rim into the salt until evenly coated. Set aside.
- Build the margarita: Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Pour in the 3 ounces tequila first, followed by the 1 ounce orange liqueur, 1 ounce agave syrup, passion fruit pulp, and fresh lime juice from 2 limes.
- Shake well: Cover the shaker and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is cold and slightly frosted.
- Serve: Fill the prepared glass with ice and strain (or pour) the margarita into the glass.
- Garnish and enjoy: Garnish with the reserved passion fruit half and serve immediately. Cheers!
Notes
- Passion fruit options: Fresh passion fruit gives the best tangy flavor. If you can’t find it, substitute 2 tablespoons passion fruit purée (or a good-quality bottled purée). If it’s sweetened, reduce the agave to taste.
- Sweetness level: This margarita is “sweet-tart.” For a tarter drink, use ½ ounce agave; for sweeter, add an extra ¼–½ ounce.
- Make it spicy: Muddle 2–3 jalapeño slices in the shaker before adding ice (or shake with a small slice). Taste after shaking—heat builds fast.
- Strain vs. pour: For a cleaner sip, strain into fresh ice. If you like it more rustic/pulpy, pour it all in (including the passion fruit seeds).
