The last few weeks have offered very little in terms of good health. I reared up from my bed for a smidgeon of a second to celebrate my birthday only to be brought back down the very next day with a head so full of snot it felt room for my eyes was at a minimum. I know a food blog is not where you go to read about snot so I’ll keep the details to a select few but suffice it to say that my husband is doubting his agreement to the “in sickness” part and is ready to get back to the “in health”.
I finally took my stubborn ass to the doctor last week and got some meds and am feeling slightly more like myself than I have in a long time. On the upside if you put on a few extra pounds than was desired over the winter, I’m here to tell you that its nothing a little flu/food poisoning/sinus infection won’t get rid of—just trying to stay positive.
Since I’ve been subsiding on little more than miso soup and smoothies I thought I’d celebrate my return to the webisphere with a little juice drink that is sure to knock out any lingering illness that might be hiding in my bones. If nothing else this color combo is sure to put a smile on your face.
Agua frescas are the sweeter, more refreshing cousins of fresh-squeezed juice, which is known as jugo (who-go) in Mexico. Think of them as fruit or flower-flavored soda but without the carbonation. This citrus-berry combo has a hint of sour but is mostly sweet with a little honey added for good measure (which is as it should be). That being said, if you blend it up and it seems sweet enough for your tastes without the honey that’s fine too.

- 14 mandarins (about 3 pounds)
- 1 pint strawberries, hulled
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup honey (optional)
- Juice mandarins (you should have about 2 cups of juice). Place mandarin juice, strawberries, water, and honey, if using, in the blender.
- Cover and blend on high until smooth. Taste and add more honey if desired. Serve immediately over ice or cover and refrigerate for up to a day in advance.
