Oh my gosh I ate too much cheesecake this weekend.
If Super Bowl Sunday is all about indulging then I did it RIGHT!! But now I’m ready to get back to business, which means a quick injection of vitamins and minerals preferably in sipping form and ideally one that looks like the sunrise.
Inspired by Chris Martin’s Super Bowl shoe choice, I decided to make a vibrant smoothie of many colors, or okay, two colors, with the flavor of the tropics. The bottom layer is a frosty combination of raspberries and orange juice which then gets topped with a tropical one-two punch of passion fruit and mango.
I stock up on frozen fruit purees (Goya makes several flavors) like passion fruit (maracuyá in Spanish) guava, and tomaté de arbol whenever I spot them. Most Mexican markets stock them in their freezers but I even think Whole Foods and some other major grocery stores now carrying them. These fragrant sweet-tart flavors are all you need to brighten a bitter cold winter day and are a necessity (in our house at least) to keeping disagreeable moods at a tolerable level—you DO NOT want me to start whining about the weather.
I asked Hiro to model for these pictures and initially he didn’t want to have to drink the smoothie (!!) so I compromised and said he didn’t have to drink it, just pretend. After his first “pretend” sip, however, he changed his mind. “I don’t want to pretend anymore, Mama. I’m going to drink it for real.” Good choice, my boy.

Sunrise Smoothie Recipe
A refreshing tropical smoothie that will bring in the sunshine no matter what time of year it is. Made from raspberries, mango, passion fruit, and orange. You can use fresh or frozen fruit here. Frozen is more convenient and it gives the smoothie a nice frosty texture, but if you have really delicious ripe, fresh fruit then by all means use it! (Add a few ice cubes though to make sure the smoothie is nice and chilled.) Making the smoothie in two batches is just for appearance sake to make the layers. You can blend everything all together if you don't need a sunrise mimicked in your glass.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
- 6 tablespoons orange juice
- 1 ripe mango, peeled, pitted, and cubed
- 1/2 cup frozen passion fruit puree, thawed slightly
- 2 tablespoon honey
Instructions
- Combine raspberries and orange juice in a blender. Blend on high until smooth. Pour into a tall glass.
- Rinse out blender then add remaining ingredients. Blend on high until smooth. Pour on top of the raspberry mixture and enjoy!
