If you’re looking for a new healthy breakfast recipe, this is it! This creamy banana smoothie recipe swaps sweet, delicious California prunes for honey or added sugar. Vegan and gluten-free!

This banana smoothie recipe has become a staple at our house in the last month or so. We found ourselves overloaded with frozen bananas in the freezer—way more than I could ever make banana bread with—so I started throwing them in the blender to make tasty smoothies.
I think because I usually freeze bananas for banana bread , I wanted to make a smoothie with those same cozy flavors. I added cinnamon and vanilla then used fat, juicy California prunes instead of added sugar, honey, or agave syrup.
I’m actually obsessed with prunes, I eat four or five everyday as a snack. They taste so good and are high in fiber, low in calories, and support digestive health and bone health. They add the perfect amount of sweetness to this smoothie plus a richness you wouldn’t get from other sweeteners.

Banana Smoothie Recipe (Step-by-Step)
The frozen bananas and prunes make this smoothie milkshake creamy!
step one
Combine. If your frozen bananas are whole you will need to peel and slice them. Take a small paring knife, cut off both ends and then slide the knife between the skin and flesh to peel them. Slice into thick slices.
Add the frozen banana slices and the rest of the ingredients to the blender, starting with the liquid first. Add a cup of ice cubes if you like a super fluffy smoothie.

step two
Blend. Turn the blender to high and blend until smooth.
step three
Enjoy! Divide smoothie between two glasses or enjoy the whole thing yourself! Top with extra chia seeds if you’d like.

Tips for Freezing Bananas

When you have overly ripe bananas, don’t throw them out—freeze them! The best way to do this is to peel them, slice the bananas and lay them in a single layer on a baking sheet or large plate.
Place the baking sheet with the bananas in the freezer and let freeze until hard. Once they are solid, pop them off the tray and into a plastic bag. Store the bag in the freezer until you are ready to use them. I like to put how many bananas are in each bag written on the outside.
Variations

- Add a handful of fresh greens like spinach or kale.
- Up the protein with a tablespoon of your favorite nut butter (I personally like almond butter).
- Berries make a great addition too (blueberry is my go-to).
- Another protein booster is protein powder.
- Chocolate lovers would be happy with a teaspoon or two of cocoa powder.
- Get some healthy fats by adding a scoop or two of ripe avocado.
