I love popcorn in almost any form, but there’s something about the combination of chile and lime that makes it especially hard to stop eating.
The lime cuts through the richness of the coconut oil, honey softens the sharper edges of the Tajín, and grinding the seasoning into a fine powder means you get that punchy chili lime seasoning on every fluffy kernel instead of finding all the good stuff at the bottom of the bowl.
It’s exactly the kind of flavorful snack I want for movie night, game days, cocktails with friends, or any time chips somehow feel a little boring.
Ingredients You’ll Need

- Coconut oil: You’ll use half for popping the kernels and the other half for the lime-honey mixture. It’s how you get that true movie popcorn flavor. You can substitute avocado or vegetable oil if you prefer, although the flavor will be slightly different.
- Popcorn kernels: A 1/2 cup popcorn kernels makes about 10 cups of popped popcorn. If you already have plain popped popcorn, you can skip straight to seasoning.
- Honey: The honey helps the seasoning stick to each and every kernel.
- Lime juice: Fresh lime juice gives this snack its signature tangy flavor.
- Tajín: This chile-lime blend provides the salt, acidity, and mild heat that make the popcorn so addictive. If you want to know more about what’s actually in it and other ways to use it, check out my guide to Tajín seasoning.
- Fine sea salt: Optional, depending on how salty your Tajín is and how strongly seasoned you like your popcorn.
The Trick to Better Flavored Popcorn
Here’s the little detail that makes a surprisingly big difference: grind the Tajín (or whatever spice mix you’re using).
Straight from the bottle, most popcorn spices like Tajín have a slightly coarse texture. That’s perfect sprinkled over mango, cucumber, or watermelon, but those larger granules have a harder time sticking evenly to popcorn.
Give the Tajín a few quick pulses in a clean coffee or spice grinder until it becomes a fine powder. Now, instead of dropping straight to the bottom of the bowl, the chili lime seasoning clings to every fluffy kernel.
It seems like a small extra step. It is also absolutely worth doing.

How to Make Chili Lime Popcorn
step one
Heat 1/4 cup coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup popcorn kernels, cover with a lid, and leave a small gap for steam to escape.

step two
Cook until the popping slows to about one pop every couple of seconds. Immediately transfer the popcorn to a large bowl.
step three
Melt the remaining 1/4 cup coconut oil and stir in 1 tablespoon honey and 1 teaspoon lime juice.

step four
Pulse 1 to 2 tablespoons Tajín in a clean coffee grinder until it becomes a fine powder.

step five
Drizzle the coconut oil mixture over the popcorn and toss well. Sprinkle with the ground Tajín, toss again, then taste and add salt if desired.

Tips for the Best Chili Lime Popcorn
- Leave a small gap in the lid. Letting steam escape helps keep the popcorn crisp instead of chewy.
- Listen for the popping to slow. Once you hear about one pop every 1–2 seconds, take the pot off the heat so the remaining kernels don’t burn.
- Grind the Tajín finely. A finer chili lime seasoning sticks much better to the popcorn than the coarser seasoning straight from the bottle.
- Drizzle slowly. Add the coconut oil mixture a little at a time while tossing so you don’t end up with soggy patches.
- Serve it fresh. Because the lime juice adds moisture, this popcorn has the best texture soon after it’s made.

A Few More Ways to Change It Up
Once you have the basic chili lime popcorn recipe down, it’s easy to play around with new flavors.
For a richer version, swap the coconut oil used in the topping for melted butter.
Want it sweeter? Add a little more honey for something that lands somewhere between savory popcorn and chile-lime kettle corn. Or try my Smoked Maple Butter Popcorn with Habanero Salt for another sweet-spicy popcorn situation.
You can also experiment with smoked chili powder, cayenne, garlic powder, or a few drops of hot sauce. The basic chile-lime combination is forgiving, which makes it a great starting point for trying different flavors.
Can I Use an Air Popper?
Absolutely. Use an air popper to make approximately 10 cups of popcorn, then prepare the coconut oil, honey, lime juice, and Tajín as directed.
Because air-popped popcorn doesn’t have the initial coating of oil from the large pot, take extra care to drizzle the topping gradually and toss well so the seasoning sticks evenly.

Plant Powered Mexican Cookbook

Naturally, this is one of my favorite great snacks for movie night, but it’s just as good for parties. Add it to a Mexican appetizer board with dips, veggies, and plenty of other things to nibble on.
I also love setting out a big bowl when friends come over. The chile and lime are especially good with a cold Mexican beer, a classic margarita, or a paloma.
It makes an easy game day snack too, especially since you can make a big batch in just a few minutes. These baked jalapeño poppers with Tajín breadcrumbs would fit right in alongside it.
Basically, if you have people standing around your kitchen with drinks in their hands, put this popcorn in front of them.

How to Store Chili Lime Popcorn
Chili lime popcorn is best eaten fresh since the lime juice will soften it over time. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy within a day.

Ingredients
Equipment
Method
- Heat 1/4 cup coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add 1/2 cup popcorn kernels, cover with a lid, and leave a small gap for steam to escape.
- Cook, shaking the pot frequently, until the popping slows to about one pop every couple of seconds. Immediately transfer the popcorn to a large bowl.
- In the same pot you used to cook the popcorn or in a separate small skillet, melt the remaining 1/4 cup coconut oil and whisk in 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon lime juice.
- Pulse 1 to 2 tablespoons Tajín in a clean coffee grinder until it becomes a fine powder.
- Drizzle the coconut oil mixture over the popcorn and toss well. Sprinkle with the ground Tajín, toss again, then taste and add fine sea salt if desired.
Notes
- Oil: Neutral-flavored avocado oil or clarified butter (ghee) can be used instead of coconut oil. Standard butter works well, though it contains more water content, which can make popcorn slightly softer.
- Why Grind the Tajín? Grinding the Tajín in a coffee or spice grinder turns the coarse salt and chili flakes into a fine powder. This helps the seasoning stick to every kernel instead of falling to the bottom of the bowl.
- Avoid Soggy Popcorn: Adding liquid (lime juice) to oil can cause moisture. Whisk the melted oil, honey, and lime juice vigorously right before drizzling, and toss the popcorn continuously as you pour to distribute it evenly without soaking single kernels.
- Make-Ahead & Storage: Best enjoyed fresh. If storing leftovers, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Do not refrigerate, as moisture will cause the popcorn to go stale quickly.
